Agent Mode in ChatGPT – Should You Let Go or Stay in Control?
ChatGPT has gotten hands.
That’s the short version...
The slightly longer one is that OpenAI has introduced a feature called agent mode, allowing ChatGPT to use a kind of remote browser to click around online, fill out forms, gather data – and in some cases – take action.
Sounds clever. It is. But it’s not without risk. And that’s exactly why it matters to you as a store owner.
What can agent mode actually be used for?
This isn’t a tool you just hand over the keys to. Think of it more like an intern with access to your screen and mouse – and something you should only use with caution.
1. Competitor tracking
- Visit competitor stores
- Log prices, variants, and delivery times
- Compare changes from week to week
2. Supplier and shipping research
You can ask it to find:
- 3 B2B suppliers of organic cotton with free EU shipping
- The cheapest rates for shipping 1 kg to the US
- Current delivery times for specific countries
3. Testing your own store
ChatGPT can:
- Perform a test purchase
- Describe the process step by step
- Comment on any bugs or UX issues
4. Public data collection
- Fetch prices for selected Shopify apps
- Monitor changes in reviews or features
- Extract data from government sites, blogs, or logistics providers
Why it’s not just plug-and-play
It sounds easy. But it requires thought.
- You must actively allow ChatGPT to use agent mode
- You need to know what you’re asking – and how to verify the result
- You’re still responsible if it makes mistakes
- You should never use it for sensitive data, logins, or access-restricted systems
My take?
"Agent mode is exciting. But it should be used thoughtfully – and never as a substitute for your own judgment."
How I use agent mode myself
- Compare shipping rates
- Track updates in Shopify apps and features
- Monitor changes on selected competitor sites
But I never let it run on its own. And I don’t blindly trust what it returns.
